Mumford Chapter XXI 1840-1849:
The GristMill built by Donald McKenzie east of the State Street bridge was purchased by Oliver Allen I in 1841. It was operated by the Allens or their tenants until 1901 when it was destroyed by fire.

Allen Woolen Mills
Two enterprisng young men, Oliver Allen, the first, and William Remington, decided to go into the woolen manufacturing business after working together in Canandaigua, New york. They came to Caledonia and started a woolen mill in 1821 - this was one of the earliest mills west of the Genesee. In 1829 the opportunity came to buy a "water privilege" on Oatka (or Allan's) Creek in Mumford. They ereted a stone mill...the business was carried on by the Oliver Allen family untill 1902.
Oliver Allen, the first, installed new machinery, enlarged the business and in 1844 took his son, Oliver, the second, into partnership with him. When his father died in 1848, the second Oliver Allen was well equiped to continue these thriving mills. Oliver Allen, the second, ran the business from 1848 and in 1872 Oliver Allen the third, was taken into the firm, (Oliver Allen & Son).
In 1902 the Allen Mills were forced to close as they could not compete with the larger mills of the New England area ( his equipment could not compare with the machines of the American Woolen Company).
When A. G. Spaulding, the great National League baseball player, organized hie athletic and sporting goods store in Chicago, his speciality was outfitting baseball teams with uniforms. For years the flannels used in making uniforms were made in Oliver Allen & Son mill.

I went to the Village of Mumford, July 30, 1999, looking for Allen grave sites, found a cemetery on road to Genesee Country Museum, and found a very large oblisk with the Allen name on it, and the names of many of his family members, Leonard, Katherine, Lillian, Harry, Charles & Leonard's son Atkinson. A man in the cemetery said the keeper of the recodrs was his brother, Carl Worden
