Culver Road Rochester New York

  • If this car turns right here, off of Monroe Avenue, it will be on the beginning of Culver Road. Culver goes straight north until it hits Lake Ontario. It is City of Rochester property all the way. I rode the length of it on my bike and photographed a few of the landmarks. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Culver Road in Rochester, New York. This is Lake Riley. The Wilderness Family wrote a song about it called "Crossing Lake Riley" and Dreamland Faces did a cover version of it. They used to turn barges around in here as they worked the Erie Canal. That is Cobbs Hill in the background with a reservoir and an old graffiti covered tank up there. I played Little League here and used to skate on this pond when we had winters. A local business man named Gideon Cobb ran a brick factory on this property
  • Does the National Guard still use this facility? I don't imagine they use the big gun anymore. Maybe we need a draft to keep track of these things.
  • The 490 expressway that crosses under Culver Road is where the bed of the old Erie Canal used to be. After they moved the canal a subway line ran along here and connected downtown and Brighton. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • There are beautiful old homes along Culver. This one is between Park Avenue and East Avenue. These houses are all so big - they serve as a reminder of when Rochesterians were livin' large. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This place used to be Empire Electric, a locally owned lighting store, before the big chains did them in. This collection of buildings is starting to look like a flea market now. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This big building with no windows by the tracks here has been a lot of things over the years. Vertis is a marketing company with facilities in Baltimore, Chicago, Irving Ca. and Chicago. Their web site says, "We will break through competitive barriers with the kinds of marketing solutions that provide increased visibility and market return—with peace of mind". They have a funky collection of vehicles in the parking lot. I'm guessing they print direct mail here. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Monro Muffler may still be a local company but they have stores all over the Northeast. You would think they would have enough flexibility in their building plans to allow for windows or something in this wall that faces the street. And the landscaping is hideous. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • The red brick building on the left is the old Burroughs "calculating machine" company. This is where William got the money to maintain his habit while writing things like Naked Lunch. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I grew up near here. This building is on the corner of Humboldt and Culver and it used to be an old Sinclair gas station, the one with the dinosaur for their logo. Harris is doing a booming business thanks to the ridiculous war that W. started. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Sticky Lips BBQ looks like it has been here since the late forties and that's the idea. But they came along after Dinosaur Bar-BQ and they are trying a family approach instead of the biker bar thing. I like their dry rubbed ribs and the odor is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This buiding used to be a Carvel's and then Kim's Carival Creams. I took this extra photo of the place to show Kim's old sign that is is still standing in the parking lot to the right. I love that sign. It is featured in the Funky Signs section. Culver Road in Rochester, New York. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Hard to believe that this place used to have some of the best breakfasts in town. It was called the "Busy Bee" restaurant. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Lorraine's moved from the South Wedge to this former auto parts store. They serve Starbucks coffee and have been a great addition to the neighborhood. We saw a breakdancing event here a few years back. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • They went all out with the redesign of East High's athletic fields. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I grew up in this neighborhood and was here when they started building the new East High in 1960. I love the look of this place. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Kadre's gas station used to be on this corner where Eckards is and a local sub shop was where Papa John's is now. Who would eat Papa John's when Nino's is right down the street? Main and Culver looks like almost any other corner in the world now. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This used to be a funeral home. I was here for Tim Schapp's mom's funeral, his dad's funeral and then his own funeral when he died prematurely. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • There was a full length tractor trailer parallel parked out here every night for months. The driver must have lived in Culver Manor. That purple car doesn't look like it's going anywhere fast either. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Just beyond Main Street on the right is the Beechwood Nursing Home. Healthcare providers dressed in white were always huddled by the loading dock in the rear smoking cigarettes. It was closed down by the state for not taking proper care of their patients. The management always kept the grounds up but everything has gone to hell now. Even the name, Nursing Home, is outdated now. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Notice the mail box out in front of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This used to be the Beechnut Post Office. They closed the Post Office in 1979. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • There was an IGA here and then it became a CVS. The Eckerd at Main and Culver put the CVS out of business and it bacame a Family Dollar store. Good thing someone is keeping track. Chang Lung makes some nice sesame noodles and chicken and rice soup but it seems they sell mostly chicken wings. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Cal's has always done a steady business with the locals. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I see this gas station is for sale. We bought a little power boat from the guy that owns this place. He had it displayed on the corner here. I checked it out on my bike and came back with the car to pick it up. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This cobblestone house is beautiful but the bone headed landlord paved the entire lawn. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • The Golden Fox is popular but I have no idea why. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • They are so much wilder in California. This is one funky place. It's like installation art. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Iglesia de Dios El Tabernaculo will rock this corner if you are here at the right time. I have hung out here just to listen. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Farmworker Legal Services provides free legal assistance and referrals to migrant and seasonal farmworkers. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I have never seen anyone go in or out of Donalds. It's perfect. It may be a museum. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Unassuming. Classic. This is the citadel of pizza. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Calabrese's Bakery was here for fifty years or so but not anymore. Relative newcomer, James Brown's Place, is the new king of the block. If you like heavy breakfasts, this place is calling you. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Johnny's made their mark in 1997 by being a "smoke free bar". This sidewalk here is where everyone smoked. Now that all bars are smoke free, they go by "Johnny's Irish Bar". Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This VW or these VWs, seen near The Culver/Merchants Road intersection, was concocted by one of Culver Road's most infamous residents. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • It seems that Indians or Pakistanis own most of the convenience stores around here but this place has an especially high profile. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This quaint little house is also a business. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I had to get up close to see what they were selling. I like it. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Saint Ambrose is where Father Jim Callan got his start before the Catholic Church gave him the boot for being too Christlike. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Donuts Delite was turquoise and pink before it faded away. They spelled both doughnuts and delight wrong. Their plain fried cakes and coffee were extraordinary. It was too perfect to last. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This totem pole at 2046 Culver is one my favorite landmarks. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • It is hard to drive by Dentico's Italian Villa and not want to stop in. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Not exactly on Culver but at the Norton intersection where the only thing to look at is this place. The other corners have gas stations and a Wilson Farms. And Tuxedo Corner had a strobe light in the window at night for a while to attact your attention. When was the last time you rented a tuxedo? Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Palermo's has dinner dishes ready to go. They carry Martusciello's bread and they prepare a fantastic Olive Medley. They have a great meat section and Palermo's recently won an informal Italian Sausage Challenge, outgunning the fabled Rubino's. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I case you want to call Dixon Manor, they put their phone number right on the building. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Smiley gas. Taylor's sometimes has the cheapest gas on Culver but Refiners down the street usually takes that prize. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Abby Wambach graduated from Mercy High School before super stardom. Her family runs Wambach's Farm Market. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. Saint Cecilia's has an old time summer festival with goofy games of chance in their parking lot. And they do a healthy bingo business at night. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • There are about 3000 Turkish Americans in Rochester. A lot of them came to work at Hickey Freeman's and Bond's Clothing Company. I had a Turkish tailor make a suit for me when I was married. His name was Barris and he worked in the Cox Building downtown. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Ridge and Culver or "Swaynes's Corners", the former four corners of Irondequoit, is a ghost of the past. The old hotel has been gone for fifty tears now. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • They tore down the gas station. This is the face of the new four corners of East Irondequiot. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I grabbed this shot before they tore this landmark down to make room for Walgreens. They do wear their hair a little differently out here than they do in the city. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I love this house although the flat roof could be a problem around here. It looks like a house in the old section of Beverly Hills. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • The new owner of this place made so many changes I had to stop back and take an updated photo. 3124 Culver Road Rochester, New York
  • This Lutheran Church is named after the Transfiguration, Christ's appearance in radiant glory to three of his disciples while they were praying in a garden. The chuech has a little garden area just behind their sign here and just below the stained glass window that depicts this event. Maybe something will happen if you sit here for a while. The real attraction here though, is this giant tree that looks like it has done a little transfiguring. The plaque states that the International Society of Arboriculture recognized this significant tree in the bicentennial year as having lived here in the Revolutionary War. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Saint Salome's would be the third Catholic Church we have seen on this trip down Culver. St. Salome's was begun as a vacation chapel for the many summer homes on the lake and bay back in 1908 and is the oldest parish in the Town of Irondequoit. It looks pretty modern. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • We saw a tiny Elvis impersonator here back in the seventies when this palce was called "Mastrella's". The small print on the sign here says "Mastrella's presents The Tattoo Barbeque". Maybe this is what happens when one generation passes the family business onto the next. If it is, someone should tell the kids that "Tattoo Barbeque" doesn't sound very appetizing. Culver Road, Rochester, New York.
  • The Park View Bowl is "now booking private parties". I'm thinking of renting this place. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Parkside Diner does a fantastic business. Notice the people sitting on the porch while they wait for a table. I took this photo at one o'clock in the afternoon and the clock above the door reads, "nine o'clock, Time to Eat". Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Whispering Pines Miniature Golf is the first miniature golf place in the country. It was open for business in 1930. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Frametastic on Culver Road Rochester, New York. Stop in and see Joan, the sole proprietor once her husband died. She is a treasure.
  • W.A.B. Drug (I call it Wab) is an independent drug store. That is a heroic feat in the age of Walgreens. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • A 24 hour bait shop in the vending machine out front and little packets of mysterious lures inside. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • This car is always parked here. Shamrock Jack's has a darn good fish fry and they serve it any night of the week. We were here last Saint Patty's day and it took the whole lunch hour for our corn beef sandwiches to arrive and then the bartender gave them to a couple of regulars. It was fun anyway. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • The town of Irondequoit moved this old cobblestone smokehouse from the Fire Department near Ridge down Culver to this empty lot that they have now named Oscar "Ollie" Roth Park. It is more like a parking lot since they paved the whole thing. They put new windows in it and it is now the world's smallest art gallery. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I took a shot inside the gallery. It's as small as it looks with a severe shortage of wall space. There was a rocking chair for the curator and a small tv to occupy their time. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • That's the Reunion Inn on the left. I guess you could have a nightly reunion there at the bar if you wanted to. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • The Jack Rabbit is one of the oldest wooden Roller Coasters in the USA. Roller Coaster buffs travel to Sea Breeze to ride the Jack Rabbit. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Jack Rabbi? Fun for our Jewish friends. Who took the "T"? It was here last week. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Churi's Ice Cream Parlor, right across the street from Sea Breeze Amusement Park is now serving Thai food. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • I would love to get inside this quonset hut. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Nick's has a great salad bar and some damn good manicotti but the real charm of this place is memorabilia that Nick has on the walls from his stint as a manager of Club 86 in Geneva. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Fioravanti's is nice cozy place for a relaxing dinner. You get a view of the lake if you sit in the back, at least for now. The lot to the right is up for sale. You can bring your wine here and save some bucks. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • As the sign says, a French trading post was located here in the early 1700's but where was "New France"? Is that Canada? I turned to Wikipedia: "New France (French: la Nouvelle-France) describes the area colonized by France in North America during a period extending from the exploration of the Saint Lawrence River, by Jacques Cartier in 1534, to the cession of New France to the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1763. At its peak in 1712 (before the Treaty of Utrecht), the territory of New France extended from Newfoundland to Lake Superior and from the Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The territory was then divided in five colonies, each with its own administration: Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and Louisiana." Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Very soon Vic & Irv's won't look like this. They have some ambitious plans to rebuild the place so it will face the bay once the town of Irondequoit moves the end of Culver so it meets the lake on the other side of Bill Gray's where the old drive-in was. Stay tuned. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • When I was sixteen you could drive up to Marge's and run in and pick up a six. Times have changed but Marge's hasn't changed all that much. Ron Beth is gone and the juke box isn't as good as it was. But the wacky ambiance is still the same. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • It used to be free to launch your boat here until Pataki instituted his "pay as you go" system. I think it's five bucks to drop your boat in here now. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
  • Culver Road definitely ends here in the summer when the bridge has been turned to open the channel. In the winter you can cross the outlet and be on Lake Road in Webster. Thanks for traveling out Culver Road with me. Culver Road in Rochester, New York.
