My father didn’t use cursive or lowercase. He was strictly an all-caps kinda guy. Even when he was cutting verse into linoleum, in this case a loose translation of an R. M. Rilke verse. We were at a friend’s house whose parents were close friends with my parents, and she had two of my father’s Christmas cards on her living room wall. Both were linocuts. I don’t have a copy of this one, so I photographed it. They were behind glass, so I picked up some serious reflections, and I couldn’t save the left half of the print, a village on a hillside at night with a church steeple towering above the houses.

  1. And all this stood upon her
    And was the world
    and stood upon her
With all its fear and grace
    As trees stand
